Lorice “Lori” Boe, 79 died Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the Luverne, MN, Hospice Cottage.

A memorial service will take place at Heritage Funeral Home on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. with a luncheon and fellowship to follow.

She was born in Devil’s Lake, ND to Merlin and Helen Boe.  Merlin was a devoted husband and father who worked as a manager for Western Union Telegraph. Helen, a talented cook, seamstress, and avid bridge player, was home raising Lori and her six brothers—Tim, Tom, Marty, Bob, Jeff, and Dave.  As the eldest, Lori did a lot of babysitting for her younger brothers, even taking them along on dates to get ice cream at The Barrell Drive-In.

Some of Lori’s favorite memories came from her childhood years in Yankton, SD.  She started Kindergarten at Sacred Heart Elementary School. She had the run of the town and would visit her favorite people and places after school.  While her family lived there, Lori’s maternal grandfather lived with them while he was installing plumbing in the State Hospital.  He brought Ann Marie, his youngest, with him from Bismarck, ND, and she attended school at Mount Marty.  Lori loved living there with her parents, brothers, grandfather, and aunt.  Throughout life, Lorice always had a special bond with her aunt Ann; she thought of her as a sister.

Years later, after moves to Fremont, NE, and Burlington, IA, Lori’s family relocated to Sioux Falls where she graduated from Washington High School, class of 1962.  Lorice was a bright, creative, and hardworking student who excelled in school.  She loved to read throughout her life—especially novels by British authors like James Herriot and Agatha Christie.   She graduated at 17 years old and began working as a secretary at Wilson Trucking.

Later, while working at All American Transport, Lorice met Larry Larson.  The two married in 1967 and they had their daughter Lisa.  As Lisa got older, she and Lori began to travel.  Loving all things English, Lori’s first big trip was to London to see some of the places she’d read about.  From there, Lori and Lisa traveled throughout England, Wales, Scotland, France, Italy, and Canada.  They did some great road trips in the US too, visiting family in California and Idaho.  Lori especially loved being near the ocean, watching the waves and taking ferries into San Francisco.
Over the years, she pursued a variety of careers: receptionist, stenographer, personal assistant, volunteer, picture framer, and, finally, education assistant at Roosevelt High School.  Lori also often worked on volunteer projects through Junior League.  She researched and wrote the background summaries for each of the animals in the Delbridge Museum of Natural History, she created reading kits for children at the downtown public library, and she helped with some of the first Sidewalk Arts events in town.
But family has always been Lorice’s first priority.  After starting to work full-time, Lori saved for two years to help take her entire family to California on Amtrak to visit Disneyland.  Her brothers often tell stories of her generosity:  She would carry change at the bottom of her purse, and let her brothers reach in and grab a handful or she’d take them for treats and shopping for clothes downtown.  In later years, she’d throw great Sunday football parties for family to watch the Vikings play.  She often took her nephews to movies and basketball games.  Lori loved to spontaneously head up to Minneapolis to see her uncle Harris or to visit Ann Marie in ND.

Lorice also loved animals.  Her first pet was a bichon named Maggie.  Maggie and Lori would hop in the car and go for a ride almost every night. The two even road-tripped to California, Massachusetts, and Idaho together.  Lori also adopted two cats named Alex and Abby who kept her good company in her later years.

Survivors include her daughter Lisa (Rob) Larson, her brothers Thomas (Pam) Boe, Robert (Mary) Boe, Jeffrey (Deb) Boe, and David (Veronica) Boe. Lori was preceded in death by her parents Merlin and Helen Boe and her brothers Timothy and Martin Boe.
