Russell Arthur Prince, Jr., was born August 4, 1944, to Russell and Gladys (Pagels) Prince, Sr., in Sioux City, IA. He graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, SD, in 1962. He then attended South Dakota State University and graduated from Augustana College with a BS in Biology.
He married Tacy Sawin in Lead, SD, on May 14, 1966. They made their home in Sioux Falls where Russell joined the Sioux Falls police department January 1, 1967. He also worked as security for Sioux Valley Hospital and Sears. He retired from the police detective bureau in 1994. After retirement, Russ and Tacy traveled for two years and built a home in Lead, SD.
Following Tacy's death, Russell married Patty Gossard on September 9, 2006, in Spearfish, SD. They made their home in the shadow of Bear Butte outside Sturgis, SD. Patty and Russell traveled to Arizona and Texas for winters.
Russell was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the International Order of Odd Fellows. He loved fishing, camping, traveling, woodworking, bicycling, and watching his grandchildren in athletics.
Russell, Jr., 75, Sturgis, passed away Monday, September 23, 2019, in Sturgis. He is survived by his wife, Patty Gossard Prince; one daughter, Angela (Chad) King; one son, Russell Prince III; four grandchildren, Canyon and Journey King, Russell Prince IV "RJ" (fiancé, Dominique Traversie), and Jayna Prince; great-grandson, Daxton Daniel Prince; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Tacy Sawin Prince; and sisters, Lois Wade and Marrieta Johnson.
Visitation will be Friday, September 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
A memorial has been established to Lewy Body Dementia Research.
