WALLACE WERNER
1944-06-03 2014-12-02
Dr. James Werner (Jim), 70, of Haymarket, died December 2, 2014. He was born to the late Linus and Thelma Werner on June 3, 1944, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Jim graduated from Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1970. He married Susan Bisbee in 1971 in Evanston, Illinois. Following two years of active duty as a physician in the U.S. Army at Fort Eustis, he and Susan settled in the Manassas area in 1974.
As a primary care physician, Jim cared passionately for the well-being of his patients. At the time he began working in Manassas, there were only seven medical physicians practicing in the area. As such, he treated a wide variety of medical conditions. Jim continued to serve his patients and the greater community up to his death through his busy family practice and as a Senior Active Physician with Prince William Hospital.
Jim played a significant role in the development of the medical infrastructure in the Manassas area through his work at the hospital. He held multiple positions in the growing hospital system and was a past President of the Hospital Medical Staff. He spent over 15 years serving as chairman of various committees and was directly responsible for recruiting a number of outstanding physicians to the Manassas area. Many of these physicians continue to serve in the community today.
During his free time, Jim helped Susan run Sujawe Kennels, which bred Lakeland and Airedale terriers for 25 years. He was also President of the Airedale Terrier Club of America for several years. He counted among his interests various computer projects, reading, watching baseball and spoiling his grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife and two sons, Jeremy Werner of Bealeton; and Scott Werner of Brooklyn, NY; and his brother David of Elizabeth CO. He is also survived by two grandsons, Vegas and Nicolas.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Novant Health Foundation Haymarket Medical Center. For information about opportunities to support the foundation, please call 703.369.8201 or visit their web site at www.novanthealth.org/haymarket-medical-center.
