MIKE BURLEIGH

1974-11-28

Mike and I sort of defined the upper and lower boundaries of high-school-cool, with me anchoring the bottom end.  Mike drove a British racing green MG-TF roadster; I was occasionally allowed to huff around town in a ’49 Packard.  Enough said.  Mike and I weren’t high school buds, but out of the blur that mostly describes my memories of WSHS, two examples involving Mike come to mind.  The first scene is WSHS, west wing, third floor, Spanish class (perhaps about the first day).  Mike had somehow managed to snag a primo parking spot just opposite our classrooms windows, and Miss Leisinger totally lost control as the entire class rushed the windows to check out Mike’s car (this was a class that Miss Leisinger barely had control of during the best of circumstances).  The second scene is Howard Wood Field, after football practice … the showers.  A totally soaped up Mike is again loudly regaling us with his rendition of “On the Wings of a Snow White Dove.”  Mike was definitely a BIG IMPRESSION kind of guy.

Mike and I suffered through Spanish together.  Whern ever I see a MGB I think of Mike.  Great guy.
